I just finished my UFO sampler myself and the wit was definitely drinkable, but nothing to brag about. I’ll watch for the Hamster beer, I don’t think I’ve seen it here in the States. It was OK, but amongst the secret craft wits, I liked Blue Moon better. I’m sure it was a typo! 🙂Īctually, I’ve had it to. Shock Top is an Anheuser Bush product! One of their secret craft beers! The Craftbeeroclasts out there get upset at such talk. I generally like the style and have had some very nice examples – this was middle-of-the-road. I haven’t seen it in Blighty for a few years, but I have fond memories of it. Still, if you want to check out the UFO White, (you have until September I think) I won’t stop you or point and laugh (not that you’d care anyway!) – it just didn’t do it for me.
There are some examples that I think are great and its because of them that I can’t get too excited about the rest of these beers. Its a great beer style that I happen to love, but for the most part they are mostly all lumped in my mind as good, but not great. It seems everyone makes a Belgian White these days, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Still, I didn’t think that the UFO white really stood out as anything different as compared to any other brewer’s offerings. The style in general lends itself well to Summer beer enjoyment. I was happy to find it in the Harpoon Summer Variety Pack and was glad to try it. Harpoon’s UFO White hits the mark in all those areas without a doubt. Of course, they are always light, crisp and refreshing. Wheat beer, no too heavy, unfilteredness, (I made that word up – take that copywriters!) special blends of secret spices and citrus peel added in for good measure. Yes, the Harpoon UFO White ( UFO = Un Filtered Offering, BTW) is a decent Belgian-style Witbier, and just like the other offerings from the likes of Hoegaarden, Blue Moon and AB’s Shocktop, UFO White follows a similar, and for me, familiar path. With that sort of copy, there’s really no need to even write anything else! Unless, of course, you’re me and have an unhealthy obsession with destroying electrons, consuming bandwidth and filling up some disk space on a server someplace in Georgia!
